If you can contribute a prize for a raffle, an award for a winning student project or would like to become a sponsor for the Eco Expo or some part thereoif, please conact organizer Keith Reinke. A sposorship pdf file is also available for downloading and faxing - click on ‘display space’ in the menu to the right.

Prizes, awards, sponsorships of all sizes and value will be much appreciated (and will be acknowledged on our website and during the Expo), as would offers of volunteer help for preparation of environmental-educational displays and activities.

Remember all profits from the Eco Expo go towards improving environmental sustainability in our own community and the world in general, and the Eco Expo itself will educate and entertain lots of local folk of all ages and all walks of life.

Eco Gnome

Gnomes have been associated with garden settings since the 1800’s. The family has been recognised as environmental educators.

The eco branch of the family can be identified by the distinctive costume:

Yellow Cap - Solar energy
Sky Blue Shirt - Clean air
Purple Braces - Recycled Water
Blue trousers - Clean Oceans
Brown Shoes - Fertile Soil

They are often seen pushing a green wheelbarrow with a globe as the wheel to show the greening of the world, and frequently with a fruit tree in the barrow to stress the need for trees, especially fruit trees for sustainability.

We have 3 members of the eco gnome family for you to colour in, and help you better understand sustainable gardening.

Dr Teresa Green and the earth doctor will talk about the need of growing suitable vegetation.

Super Sun Ray will talk about the value of power in particular solar power, powerd by the sun.

The Eco Gnome will talk about sustainable gardens and farming

Rotary Against Malaria (RAM)

With some 300 million people being infected with malaria, including at least one million deaths from this tropical disease, the Rotary Against Malaria (RAM) program has particular significance to clubs in the South Pacific region. This program seeks to educate, as well as to provide essential equipment and training, not only for countries already affected by an increasing presence of malaria but for countries like New Zealand and Australia where vulnerability is very apparent.

Rotary Against Malaria is being supported by many districts in Australia, New Zealand, the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu. There is a growing recognition of the problem coming from further a field with requests being directed to Rotary International to include malaria as an international eradication program, along the lines of the Polio Plus campaign.

Clubs are asked to support the campaign by raising funds to provide bed nets impregnated with insecticide for distribution to affected areas, to provide microscopes for the early detection of the malaria virus and to provide educational aids to assist local groups in the elimination of mosquito breeding grounds.

The long-term goals of the program are to raise awareness of the menace of malaria, to mobilise Rotary manpower to assist with field trials of vaccine and to have RAM accepted as an international program of Rotary International.

Stamp Project

As of June 30, 2008 the Stamp project will have been in existence for 28 years. During that time it is estimated that stamps with the aggregate value of approximately $400,000 will have been sent overseas. From small beginnings in 1960, the project now handles more than 10 tonnes of envelopes per year. Approximately 1 tonne of ‘trimmed’ stamps per year are sent overseas. The bulk of these go to Oxfam in England, with the balance being sent to Rotary clubs in Madras and Calcutta in India.

The recipients sell the stamps into the retail stamp collector’s trade and use the proceeds to assist various projects they are involved in. Trimming of the stamps provides valuable occupational therapy for many people in nursing homes etc, and we are fortunate to have a large band of voluntary people who support our project.

Waste paper (mainly envelopes) is re-cycled and the proceeds used to cover our small running costs with the balance being donated to worthwhile Rotary projects.
